Addiction as a Response to Multi-Generational Trauma

We know that addiction “runs” in families. Now we are learning more about how addiction is frequently a response to multi-generational trauma and how we can treat addiction more effectively and deeply with tools that address multi-generational trauma.

“Addiction as a Response to Multi-Generational Trauma” is the title of the professional training that will explore the interplay of trauma within past generations and how it impacts anxiety, trauma and addiction in the present generation.

The training program is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, at the Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, Pa.

In this training, instructed by Karen Carnabucci, LCSW, TEP, we will explore how to detect trauma in the larger family system and how it affects the propensity to seek out mood-altering chemicals and activities.

Special emphasis will focus at the emerging healing process of Family Constellations, which is beginning to make inroads in addiction treatment in the United States, although it is highly popular around the world.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • The basics of the generational transmission of trauma.
  • How to build trust and connection within a group to explore sensitive material.
  • How the “Orders of Love” from Family Constellations can help pinpoint the origin of the trauma.
  • Learning how social history questions can be adapted to gain information about possible past trauma.

Karen will include teaching the use of action methods, particularly psychodrama, Family Constellations, guided imagery and the creative arts, to address family system information. The workshop will consist of didactic teaching, questions, demonstrations and opportunities to bring clinical case studies forward for supervision.

You will also have the option to address personal issues in a confidential setting. You may bring your lunch or plan to go out for a 45-minute lunch. Tuition is $85 (before Sept. 18, $95 after) and will include six CE credits for social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors and addiction counselors, plus psychodrama credits.  Space is limited; please contact Karen to reserve.

The training is appropriate for mental health and other health professionals, addictions counselors, educators, life coaches, clergy, community activists and others who work in social services programs as well as advanced students.

In addition, a selection of Karen’s books for professionals will be available for sale.
