Healing Eating Disorders
and Body Image Struggles with Action Methods

 Professional training with CE credits
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10, 2018 in Lancaster, Pa.
For many people food is more than food – it carries deep symbolic significance that speaks of nurturing, loving, parenting and sustenance. Eating disorders – and their sister “body image” struggles – are often the result of our distorted relationship with food and what should rightly be moments of nourishment, pleasure and comfort.

In this training workshop, instructed by Karen Carnabucci, LCSW, TEP, we take a look at some of the roles that are played out with people who have eating disorders, chronic body distress and dieting “disorders” and how we can help our clients learn new roles that carry greater health and wellness.

In addition, we explore the newer Family Constellations and how multi-generational trauma may be related to a person’s current eating disorder or body image struggles. (After all, we get our body from the ancestors!)
Finally, we will explore how distress with body image is rampant in our society as we increasingly look to "consumption" as providing satisfaction.

In this training workshop, you will learn:
  • The use of art to address unconscious connections with food, feelings and personal history.
  • How experiential skills can address and heal eating disorders and their numerous advantages over the cognitive-behavioral approach.
  • How to blend experiential methods with traditional talk therapy.
  • How to assess the roles that are at play with a person with eating disorders or body image struggles.
  • How to support a client in learning new roles through the psychodramatic techniques of mirroring, soliloquy, role reversal and the like.
  • How to facilitate safe expression of feelings without numbing with food or dissociation.
  • How to develop empathy for our bodies.
  • How to “feed the brain” with positive food choices.
  • The trauma connection – including the aspects of multi-generational trauma – with eating disorders.
There will be ample time for questions, discussion and case consultation, as well as the option to address personal issues in a confidential atmosphere.
