It's Spring, so I had fun putting together this gift basket for the silent auction at the upcoming 2017 conference of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama from May 4-7 in Clearwater, Fla.
I call this basket "Warm Up Fun," and it includes an assortment of items, including masking tape, Tarot cards, small sand tray items, a music CD, a journal and a package of colorful plastic eggs.
Here's the protocol for creating a warm up with your group with the eggs:
Close the eggs and place in basket, bowl or chair of each participant in your group. Ask participants to pick an egg. With the egg not yet opened, have group members offer a soliloquy about what they imagine might be inside. Then have them open the egg, inspect the item and share with the group (or in a dyad or triad) how he or she relates to the object inside.
If you wish, you may assign a meaning to the unopened egg to focus your warm up even further:
- Pick an egg that represents what you want out of this session.
- Pick an egg for what you'd like to have from the Spring season.
- Pick an egg that represents what is unknown to you that, if known, would change your life.
- Pick an egg that represents the dream of your inner child, inner warrior, inner heart, etc.
Do the same with Tarot or oracle cards, or pictures cut from magazines and pasted on card stock. Lay cards face down and/or face up on the floor or on the table. Give similar warm up instructions and then allow for sharing before moving into an enactment or other action structure.
